Jake Arrieta tossed the first no-hitter of 2016 on Thursday night against the Cincinnati Reds, continuing his dominance since the All-Star break last season.
Here's a collection of incredible stats to complement the Chicago Cubs right-hander's historic performance and recent dominance:
- Arrieta is the third player in Cubs history to throw multiple no-hitters. Larry Corcoran (3) and Ken Holtzman (2) are the others. It was also the 15th no-hitter in franchise history and Arrieta's second no-no in eight months.
- The Cubs scored 16 runs in Arrieta's no-hitter, the second-most runs in a no-no in MLB history behind the 1884 Buffalo Bisons (18).
- Arrieta is the first Cubs pitcher to throw a no-hitter in consecutive seasons.
- It's the fourth no-hitter to be thrown by a defending Cy Young winner:
- Arrieta's last 24 regular-season starts: 20-1, 0.86 ERA, two no-hitters, 14 starts allowing no runs, 24 straight quality starts.
- The last time Arrieta lost a regular-season game? July 25, 2015 when Cole Hamels no-hit the Cubs.
- Arrieta has thrown a pair of no-hitters on the road. Nolan Ryan is the only other pitcher to accomplish the feat.
