How Liverpool's stunning comeback vs. Dortmund ranks in Anfield's history

REUTERS

From the outside, it looked like a miracle. But for those in attendance, Liverpool's stunning comeback victory over Borussia Dortmund will go down as yet another chapter worthy enough to be mentioned in the same breath as the numerous magical wins witnessed inside Anfield.

Four second-half goals ensured the Reds a place in the Europa League semi-finals for the first time since 2010 after edging past Dortmund with a 5-4 aggregate score, with Liverpool's 4-3 win overshadowing the first leg in Germany.

Minutes after Dejan Lovren drew the ire of those associated with Liverpool when his outlandish attempt at a volley almost sailed out of the stadium, the Croatian international redeemed himself with an injury-time header to send the hosts through.

The come-from-behind performance ranks among the most memorable matches in Anfield's 132-year history.

Here's a collection of the most memorable matches held at Anfield:

1973 - Dominant UEFA Cup final performance over Gladbach

Before the neutral venues and the one-off format, finals were played much like the current knockout stage that European competitions utilise.

Meaning, the second ever UEFA Cup final was played at Anfield, where the home side got off to a flying start with a 3-0 win over European powerhouses Borussia Monchengladbach.

Bill Shankly's side came one goal short of repeating the score line during Liverpool's trip to Germany, where its 5-0 aggregate victory saw the visitors host the UEFA Cup on foreign soil.

1978 - 7-0 thrashing humbles Spurs

Those tipping Tottenham to challenge Liverpool for England's top-flight crown were left red faced after the Reds demolished the north London side.

The encounter was virtually over by halftime as Liverpool went into the break with a 3-0 lead before scoring four more en route to a 7-0 drubbing.

Liverpool would go on to reclaim its top-flight trophy, while Tottenham finished the season a mid-table side.

2005 - Liverpool edges past Chelsea to reach Champions League final

Before that famous night in Istanbul, Liverpool had to get past league rivals Chelsea.

Liverpool was looking to advance to its first European final in over 20 years, with a home date with Chelsea the only obstacle in its way following a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League semi-final.

An already buzzing Anfield crowd went into hysteria just three minutes into the contest when a controversial goal turned out to be the match-winner. After Milan Baros' acrobatic attempt came up short, Luis Garcia beat Chelsea defenders to knock the ball just over the goal line, though many Chelsea supporters will argue the ball was successfully cleared by William Gallas.

2009 - Liverpool destroys Real Madrid

Liverpool was full of confidence before its home tie with Spanish giants Real Madrid. That's what an unexpected 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu will do.

But few could have predicted the masterclass the Merseyside outfit would put on in the second leg.

The atmosphere during a European night at Anfield was an obvious advantage for the Reds as the home side only needed 16 minutes to double its lead over Real. But that was far from the last ball to bulge the back of the net as Liverpool went on to make it 2-0 by the time halftime rolled around before another two second-half tallies produced a final 4-0 scoreline for the underdogs in front of a boisterous Anfield crowd.

2014 - Biggest Merseyside derby win in over 30 years

It doesn't get much better than embarrassing city rivals Everton.

That's what the 2014 edition of the team did when Liverpool hosted the Toffees in the final Merseyside derby of the 2013-14 campaign.

The end result was a score line few in the crowd will forget as Liverpool delivered the most lopsided derby result since 1982 when it pounded Everton 4-0, thanks to a Daniel Sturridge brace and goals from Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez.
