Kings fire head coach George Karl

The Sacramento Kings officially relieved George Karl of his coaching duties Thursday after a season and a half with the franchise.

"After evaluating the team's performance this season, I determined it was necessary to move forward with a new voice from the head coaching position," general manager Vlade Divac said in a statement. "I have a great deal of respect and admiration for George and his accomplishments throughout his nearly 30 years in the NBA. On behalf of everyone in the Kings organization, I thank him for the contributions made during his time in Sacramento and wish him good fortune in the future."

Karl was hired by the Kings on Feb. 17, 2015, going just 44-68 during his tenure in Sacramento. The 63-year-old ranks fifth all time in regular-season wins with 1,175, splitting 27 seasons between the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Seattle Supersonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets, and Kings.

Sacramento will now be on the lookout for its fifth head coach since dismissing Paul Westphal in 2012.
