VIDEO: Arrieta hits longest HR by pitcher since 2009
Reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta is an expert at keeping the ball in the park when he's on the mound, but he's also becoming quite the offensive threat after bashing his third career homer Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Even more impressive, the Chicago Cubs righty delivered the moonshot, which traveled an estimated 442 feet, in his first at-bat of the season. According to ESPN, Arrieta's homer was the longest by a pitcher since 2009.
"It felt like hitting it off the sweet spot on a 7-iron," Arrieta said postgame.
In Arrieta's last 22 starts, he's amazingly hit more home runs (3) than he's allowed (2). He didn't get to bat in Chicago's season opener, which was played in an American League ballpark.
Arrieta entered the outing with the longest active regular-season scoreless streak in the majors at 29 innings.
