Trio of playoff spots up for grabs on final day of season

Jeff Curry / USA TODAY Sports

Major League Baseball's regular season wraps up Sunday with all 30 teams getting things underway at 3 p.m. ET.

The afternoon promises to have plenty of drama, as six teams are still in the wild-card hunt, and home-field advantage for all playoff matchups will be determined in the next few hours.

Here's a breakdown of what Sunday's games mean for those in the playoff picture:

Pitching Matchups

TEAM PITCHER TEAM PITCHER
Orioles Kevin Gausman (8-12 3.66) Yankees Luis Cessa (4-3 4.18)
Dodgers Kenta Maeda (16-10 3.28) Giants Matt Moore (12-12 4.21)
Blue Jays Aaron Sanchez (14-2 3.06) Red Sox David Price (17-9 4.04)
Tigers Justin Verlander (16-8 3.10) Braves Julio Teheran (6-10 3.33)
Indians Josh Tomlin (12-9 4.48) Royals Ian Kennedy (11-10 3.69)
Pirates Ryan Vogelsong (3-7 5.00) Cardinals Adam Wainwright (13-9 4.67)

Orioles/Blue Jays

The Orioles clinched at least a tie for the wild-card spot on Saturday, and could officially book their ticket to the wild-card game with a win over the Yankees. If they win and the Blue Jays lose, the Orioles will host the game. If they lose and the Blue Jays win, or if they both lose, Baltimore would travel to Toronto for the game, as the Blue Jays hold the tiebreaker. The Orioles and Blue Jays still need to be worried about the Tigers, as well. If the Blue Jays win, Orioles lose, and the Tigers win their next two games, then Baltimore would host a tiebreaker game with Detroit. If the Orioles win, Blue Jays lose, and the Tigers win their next two games, then Toronto would host a tiebreaker game with Detroit. The winner of the tiebreaker would then play the top wild-card holder in a one-game playoff.

Tigers

The Tigers have to win Sunday and need either the Blue Jays or Orioles to lose to keep their playoff hopes alive. Should that scenario play out, Detroit would then need to beat the Indians on Monday in a makeup game to force a wild-card tiebreaker. If the Tigers do force a tiebreaker game, they will be on the road, as they lost the season series with both Toronto and Baltimore.

Giants/Cardinals

The Giants control their own destiny. If they win against the Dodgers, then they'll travel to New York to take on the Mets in the wild-card game. If they lose and the Cardinals beat the Pirates, they will force a Game 163 tiebreaker against the Giants in St. Louis on Monday.

Red Sox/Indians

Despite having already clinched their respective divisions, the Red Sox and Indians still don't know where their ALDS clash will open. If the Red Sox lose to the Blue Jays on Sunday and the Indians beat the Royals, the series begins in Cleveland on Thursday. If the Red Sox win and the Indians lose, the series begins in Boston, as Boston has the better head-to-head record. If both teams win or lose Sunday, the Indians will be forced to make up their rained-out game with the Tigers on Monday to decide home-field advantage. Cleveland would have to win that game in order to open at home.
