NCAA approves rule allowing replay officials to call targeting penalties

Joe Camporeale / USA TODAY Sports

Replay officials will have more power in 2016 when it comes to targeting penalties.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a rule Tuesday allowing replay officials to make targeting calls that may have been missed by an on-field official. Those officials will also be required to review any targeting calls that are made on the field.

Targeting is a difficult penalty to call and the NCAA rules committee believes a small number of players were "incorrectly disqualified from games" in 2015.

The replay officials will be on the lookout for launching and forcible contact to the head when determining whether a hit should be deemed targeting.
