Report: SEC trying to block Michigan spring practices in Florida

The SEC is trying to put a wrench into Jim Harbaugh's plans of taking his Michigan Wolverines to Florida for spring practices.

According to a report by CBS Sports, conference commissioner Greg Sankey said he has asked the NCAA to prohibit programs from holding practices over the spring break.

As it stands, there is no rule in place to block it.

"Our primary reaction (is) that, in the face of the time-demand conversations, we've got one program taking what has been 'free time' away," Sankey said. "Let's draw a line and say, 'That's not appropriate.'"

The news comes as Harbaugh announced that he plans on holding spring practices at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

FBS players are allotted a maximum of four weeks off per year when they aren't under the watch of their given program. A trip to Florida, though, would account for one of those weeks.

Whatever an athlete does over the spring break is ultimately up to them, but Sankey believes that practicing is taking away from their "off" time.

"This seems completely counter to the dialogue," Sankey said. "We have work to do on (giving athletes a) day off. We have work to do on, how do you provide a postseason break?

"It seems this is one where reasonable people could say we just shouldn't be in this space.”

CBS reports that of all the data compiled to date, there isn't another FBS program that intends to practice over the spring break.
