Maryland gives Randy Edsall vote of confidence amid reports he'll be fired

Randy Edsall's job is safe, for now.

A report surfaced Thursday from Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports that the Maryland head coach was expected to be fired following Saturday's game versus Ohio State, but the Terrapins released a statement showing support for Edsall, sort of.

Randy Edsall is our head football coach & he'll be on the sidelines Saturday against Ohio State.

That doesn't exactly clear things up where Edsall is concerned. Maryland has a bye following Saturday's clash with the Buckeyes and the statement says nothing about his job security after that.

Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports offered a similar report, saying "a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed" that Maryland intends to fire Edsall, though when the move will take place is currently unknown.

ESPN's Joe Schad reports that Maryland has decided Edsall won't be back as head coach next season and internal discussions have taken place to decide when to make the move and how to handle an in-season coaching change.

The Terrapins have stumbled to a 2-3 record out of the gate and have only managed to score six points in their last two games, losing by a combined 67 points. Edsall is 22-33 during his time in Maryland, including a 10-23 record in conference play.
