Florida quarterback Treon Harris to start season opener vs. New Mexico State

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

Florida coach Jim McElwain said quarterback Treon Harris will start the Gators' season opener against New Mexico State on Saturday, but Will Grier will also play in that game.

"It was really close," McElwain said of the decision Wednesday, as reported by Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel. "You have two good quarterbacks to go in and play."

Despite selecting Harris to start the game, McElwain urged observers to not read that much into the decision, describing the ongoing quarterback situation in Gainesville as a "painting in progress."

Harris played in nine games during his first season with the Gators in 2014, starting six contests after coming in to relieve the embattled Jeff Driskel.

He threw for 1,019 yards, nine touchdowns, and four interceptions.
