Report: NCAA denies waiver for recruit transferring from Ohio State to Auburn
Ohio State transfer Jamel Dean will be forced to sit out this upcoming season due to NCAA transfer rules, he told David Jones of Florida Today.
Dean transferred to Auburn after being declared medically ineligible to play for the Buckeyes because of previous knee injuries. He was expected to receive a waiver allowing him to play for the Tigers immediately, but Dean says that's not the case.
"Because of the whole NCAA transfer thing, I've got to sit out a year, so I've got to redshirt," Dean said.
Dean says he could have played this year, adding that he was playing pickup basketball at the time he was ruled medically ineligible.
"But now that Auburn is giving me a chance to play, I really don't care anymore," Dean said. "At the same time, (Ohio State coaches) were telling me you can play somewhere else. They were giving me an option of getting a medical hardship (which makes an athlete ineligible to play but stays on a scholarship that doesn't count toward the NCAA limit of 85) or just transfer."
A four-star member of the recruiting class of 2015, Dean is ranked as the No. 128 overall prospect in the class by ESPN, and the No. 9 cornerback.
