Georgia Southern has bowl waiver request denied by NCAA

Dale Zanine / USA TODAY Sports

The NCAA has denied Georgia Southern's waiver to participate in a bowl this season, according to the Savannah Morning News' Donald Heath.

Tom Kleinlein, Georgia Southern's athletic director, announced Wednesday that the committee denied the Eagles' waiver because the university hasn't completed its two-year transition period.

Kleinlein will file an appeal to the NCAA membership committee and expects to hear from them in the next week.

The Eagles are in the midst of their first in year in the FBS  and are undefeated through seven league games in the Sun Belt Conference, and sit at 8-3 on the season.

Despite their surprising record, NCAA rules prevent programs going from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision to participate in bowl games.
