Heisman Watch: Trevone Boykin makes late push onto the list

As the college football season winds down, so does the opportunity for players to make their bids at winning the Heisman Trophy.

Week 13 saw Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota continue to lead the pack with his brilliance. Though, Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon is putting pressure on Mariota at a record pace.

A trio of dual-threat quarterbacks round up the list with Ohio State's J.T. Barrett, Mississippi State's Dak Prescott and TCU's Trevone Boykin making an effort to get closer to the top.

1. Marcus Mariota, QB - Oregon (1)

Mariota has been the most consistent player at the most important position in college football this season. His reign at No. 1 in the Heisman Watch has been tested a few times, but he remains at the top.

His 24-of-32 performance for 323 yards and three touchdowns, along with 73 yards rushing with a score, was what the Ducks needed to trounce Colorado 44-10.

This season he has accounted for 3,103 yards passing and 32 touchdowns against just a pair of interceptions. He has also rushed for 597 yards with nine scores.

2. Melvin Gordon, RB - Wisconsin (2)

Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon is having an all-time great season, yet it is still only good enough to put him at No. 2 on this list.

Gordon has 2,109 yards rushing and 25 touchdowns this season, in addition to 15 catches for 147 yards. He ran for at least 200 yards for the fifth time this season against Iowa on Saturday. He did it on 31 carries and added two scores.

Facing Minnesota in the Badgers' last game, another 200-yard performance could very well place place Gordon atop the list.

3. J.T. Barrett, QB - Ohio State (3)

Ohio State's J.T. Barrett has refused to stay out of the conversation for the nation's best player and he is doing his best work at the right time.

His 302 yards with four passing touchdowns were sweet, but a pair of interceptions tainted the performance. Barrett displayed that he's still equally adept at moving the ball with his legs as he is with his arm. He tacked on 78 yards rushing in the 42-27 win over Indiana.

4. Dak Prescott, QB - Mississippi State (4)

Though his performance Saturday was strong enough to help Mississippi State dismantle Vanderbilt 51-0, Dak Prescott finds himself back at the fourth slot.

His four touchdowns - three passing and one rushing - were just what he needed to avoid being bounced off the list altogether. In doing so, he still managed to tally the least amount of total offense of all games he's played this season, just 223 combined rushing and passing.

He has one more game to make an impression - the Egg Bowl against Ole Miss - and he will be more than happy to keep the Bulldogs right in the College Football Playoff picture.

5. Trevone Boykin, QB - TCU (NR)

After spending time in 2013 at wide receiver, Trevone Boykin has led TCU to the second-best scoring offense in the nation under the center, scoring 45.9 points per game.

The multi-talented quarterback has accounted for 24 touchdowns and just five interceptions thrown, with 3,021 yards passing. One thing that can hurt the Horned Frog is his 59.3 completion percentage.

He also has 548 yards gained on the ground with seven scores.
