Nebraska, Abdullah strike fear into Rutgers

Bruce Thorson / USA TODAY Sports

Nebraska welcomed Rutgers to Lincoln on Saturday by making the Scarlet Knights run for their lives.

Cornhusker running back Ameer Abdullah consistently lived up to the Heisman Trophy candidate hype and led his team to a 42-24 victory over the Scarlet Knights. He entered the game against Rutgers with superstar stats already, rushing for 1,024 yards and 14 touchdowns on 161 carries.

Abdullah performed with all of the intensity expected of him. When Nebraska was tied at 7, Abdullah rushed for a 53-yard touchdown. Then, as if he could not contain his talent, Abdullah went 48 yards to score on the very next possession.

Abdullah finished the game with 225 rushing yards on only 19 carries and three touchdowns. He also set a school record of 341 single-game all-purpose yards.

Nebraska sophomore quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. passed for 163 yards and two touchdowns. He scored the first touchdown of the game against Rutgers on Saturday with a 16-yard run, the longest run of his career so far.

Rutgers did not look good on the field. It did not help that the Scarlet Knights' offense took a hit when their quarterback Gary Nova suffered a knee injury late in the second quarter and did not return to the game.

Ultimately, while Rutgers put forth a good effort, the Knights were out-gained on both passing and rushing yards throughout the game.

And maybe outwitted by Nebraska's fancy footwork.
