Upset of the night: Mississippi State takes down No. 8 LSU

Derick E. Hingle / USA TODAY Sports

Upset watches were on high alert Saturday as the underdogs came to play.

Earlier in the day, Indiana shocked No. 18 Missouri 31-27 after a last minute incomplete pass by the Hoosiers was blessed with a late flag, giving them one more drive that ultimately led to the game-winning touchdown. Even Florida gave No. 3 Alabama a run for its money, but faltered in the second half, getting tripped up 42-21 by the Crimson Tide.

But the greatest upset of the night belonged to unranked Mississippi State, who put an end to their 14-game - and nearly 14-year - drought against No. 8 LSU with a dominant 34-29 road win. Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott did it with his legs and with his arm. His squad came out fast and stunned the Tigers with a 17-3 lead at the half. That's something to get excited about.

If the game wasn't all but over by then, Prescott made sure to finish it. He ran 56 yards for a touchdown to cap a six play drive. On his next possession, he found wide receiver Jameon Lewis for a 74-yard dagger.

Running back Josh Robinson also had a red-letter day, rushing for a career-high 197 yards and a touchdown, including a 66-yarder.

That said, the Bulldogs weren't short on unsportsmanlike plays.

Mississippi State is coming off three consecutive wins against less-than-spectacular schools (Southern Mississippi, UAB and South Alabama), but the road ahead is still daunting. After knocking off the Tigers, they're hosting No. 6 Texas A&M and then No. 5 Auburn.

The loss is disappointing for Les Miles and his LSU crew on both sides of the ball. The Bulldogs' 570 yards are the most total yards LSU has allowed under Miles (the previous high was 533 against West Virginia in 2011).

After a promising start to the year with an extremely talented group of young men, led by freshman running back Leonard Fournette, LSU's lack of experience showed. Starting Tigers quarterback Anthony Jennings couldn't get it going, throwing for a mild 157 yards and no touchdowns. But when Brandon Harris came in, he went 6-for-9 with 140 passing yards and two touchdowns. Here's how the teams stacked up on Saturday:

Team Stats Miss. State LSU
Total Yards 570 430
Passing Yards 268 341
Yard Per Pass 11.2 9.2
Rushing 302 89
Yards Per Rush 6.2 2.5

It's a night that Mississippi State won't forget any time soon, and its result will almost certainly introduce the Bulldogs into the Top 25 this week.
