Arkansas State's Giddens forced to retire due to injuries
The Arkansas State Red Wolves took a huge hit to their offensive line Monday with the announcement that center Bryce Giddens has been forced to retire due to injuries, per College Football Talk.
Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson released a statement that indicated Giddens had suffered injuries both recently and in the past, although no specifics were given.
"After multiple discussions with Bryce, his family and doctors, we support Bryce's decision to step away from football," Anderson said. "Bryce is obviously a talented football player, but the health and well-being of all our players comes first.
"We wish Bryce only the best in his future endeavors. As far as our football team goes, I'm confident we will have several players step up on our offensive line this fall to fill the vacancy left by Bryce."
Giddens took over as the Red Wolves starting center for the second game of his freshman season and occupied the spot for two years. He would have been a junior for Arkansas State in 2014.
Prior to the announcement, Giddens was one of 123 players named to the Lombardi Watch List on Monday. The award is given annually to the top lineman (offensive of defensive) or linebacker in college football.
