Arkansas Senate exempts sport stadiums from new gun law

On Wednesday, the Arkansas Senate exempted college sporting events from a new handgun law, according to Andrew DeMillo from The Associated Press.

The new law allows concealed handguns at colleges, government buildings, certain bars, and the State Capitol after the holders complete eight hours of active shooter training, but a vote of 22-10 Thursday made the stadiums exempt.

"It's one of those areas where I don't think the value offsets the risk," Republican Sen. Jim Hendren, the Senate majority leader, said before the vote. "There's alcohol, there's people getting excited and so probably I think most people agree that maybe this is one of those areas we ought to think about before we expand the privileges."

The new law goes into effect Sept. 1.
