Houston will reportedly hire Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to be its new head coach, sources told Dan Wolken of USA Today.

The hiring is pending school president Renu Khator's approval at a Thursday evening meeting.

However, Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports reports "no decision's been made and no offer's been extended to anyone," citing a source.

Even Houston athletic director Hunter Yurachek got in on the action by tweeting out a photo of grey smoke, mimicking the white smoke that rises when a new Pope is selected - making it seem like the decision hasn't been made yet.

The 41-year old Kiffin would replace Tom Herman, who left to become the head coach at Texas.

Kiffin was last a head coach at USC, where he was fired five games into the 2013 season. He finished with a 28-15 record over a period in which the Trojans were severely hampered by NCAA sanctions.

Before coaching the Trojans, he spent one year at Tennessee (7-6) and 20 games coaching the Oakland Raiders (5-15).

Known for his offensive prowess, Kiffin has revolutionized the Crimson Tide offense in each of his three seasons, coaching three different quarterbacks and winning a national championship in 2015.
