Report: Nevada hires Arizona State assistant Jay Norvell as head coach

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

Nevada will fill its vacant head coach position by hiring Arizona State pass-game coordinator/wide receivers coach Jay Norvell, sources told Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.

Norvell has no head coaching experience, but has served as offensive coordinator for Nebraska, UCLA, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The 53-year-old led the nation's 42nd-ranked passing attack this past season, as the Sun Devils threw for 259 yards per game. Sophomore Manny Wilkins threw for 2,329 yards and 12 touchdowns under Norvell's watch, but did miss significant time due to injury.

Nevada mutually parted ways with head coach Brian Polian in November after the 41-year-old's fourth season with the program. During his time with the Wolfpack, the team compiled a 23-27 record, including a 5-7 mark in 2016.
