Notre Dame's frustrating season is a mystery to many, and that includes head coach Brian Kelly.

"To be 2-5 and to outscore your opponents has got to be one of the craziest stats in America," Kelly told reporters during his Sunday teleconference.

Indeed, the Irish are averaging 29.7 points per game, while allowing 27.7 points per game. Notre Dame ranks 68th in the FBS in both categories, yet the team has nearly removed itself from bowl contention with about half a season still left to play.

Notre Dame suffered its fifth loss Saturday, a 17-10 defeat at the hands of Stanford.

Kelly also took time during his conference to address the recent Twitter activity of defensive lineman Jerry Tillery, who "liked" a series of tweets suggesting the Irish fire Kelly and replace him with former LSU coach Les Miles.

As for the quarterback play - Kelly benched DeShone Kizer at one point against Stanford - Kelly reiterated that Kizer is still his starter. When asked how Kizer could improve, Kelly said that the "play calling can be better."
