Former LSU coordinator: Tigers plotted Miles' demise

Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis, who previously served in the same role under Les Miles at LSU, said Monday the writing for Miles' dismissal had long been on the wall.

"It's always sad to see a man and a coach the caliber of Les get pushed out," Chavis told Chris Low of ESPN. "He's a Hall of Famer and a legend in the state of Louisiana. I was blessed that he gave me an opportunity to coach at a place like LSU, but I can't say I'm surprised that he's gone. They were trying to fire him when I was there, and I told him so."

Chavis left Miles' staff and joined Texas A&M after the 2014 season amid a heap of controversy. He reportedly accepted the Texas A&M job and began recruiting for the Aggies while still employed by LSU, and surprised the Tigers by turning down a rich extension on the day of their bowl game.

For his part, Chavis said his departure from LSU had nothing to do with issues between him and Miles, and was instead because he didn't trust the administration.

Miles had been the subject of hot seat rumors for the past few seasons. He was nearly fired last year, but LSU made a last-minute decision to keep him.

The longtime coach was fired Sunday after 11-plus seasons on the job. Chavis was his defensive coordinator from 2009-14.
