Gus Malzahn: I've ditched visor for cap permanently

John David Mercer / USA TODAY Sports

In a move reminiscent of LeBron James' decision to ditch his famous headband, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn traded in his signature visor for a traditional cap Saturday, and he isn't looking back.

"My daughters said something about me wearing a visor and I needed to put on a hat because I’m getting bald," Malzahn told Brandon Marcello of 247 Sports. "So I’m going to wear a hat here on out."

Malzahn debuted a shiny white cap with Auburn's "AU" logo centered on the front during Saturday's game. It, and it alone, lifted Auburn to an 18-13 victory over LSU, and perhaps secured Malzahn's job for another week.

There's one problem, though: Earlier Saturday, Malzahn received a vote of confidence from former Florida coach Steve Spurrier, who predicted Auburn to beat LSU simply because he's a visor guy, too.

"I think Auburn is due for one," were Spurrier's exact words. "I like Gus Malzahn because he likes visors."

But not even that can convince Malzahn to reconsider his decision to hang up the visor forever.

"Man, I've gotta apologize to him," said Malzahn. "I've got (my wife) Kristi and my two girls that are on me and I saw a replay and (the bald spot) looked pretty good, so I put the hat on. That's the reason I’m going to wear a hat."
