Brian Kelly: No position 'untouchable' on Notre Dame

Notre Dame was supposed to challenge for the playoffs this season. With three losses in the first four weeks, though, Irish fans have been screaming for coaching changes.

After a 38-35 loss to Duke on Saturday, head coach Brian Kelly was clearly aggravated, and very direct in describing what he saw on the field against the Blue Devils and what will occur moving forward.

"We'll have to re-evaluate what we're doing, who we are doing it with, and how we are doing it," the coach told media members. "Every position, all 22 of them will be evaluated, each and every position. There is no position that is untouchable on this football team."

When pressed on what kind of changes could be coming, Kelly said, "There will be personnel changes, absolutely."

Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has felt the most heat in recent weeks. Kelly said the defense wasn't the issue Saturday, despite giving up 498 yards.

"We did what I wanted today in terms of coaching and the coaching had nothing to do with the outcome today. I was pleased from that perspective," added Kelly.

Quarterback DeShone Kizer completed 22-of-37 for 381 yards and two touchdowns, but was picked off late. Kelly wasn't pleased with his leader on offense, stating Kizer played "below standard" and saying there's a "definite possibility" backup Brandon Wimbush could see action.

"We put our defense in a bad situation today and they gave our offense a chance to win, quite frankly. Those turnovers were deadly, and obviously the kickoff return for a touchdown," the coach said.

Kelly described the type of player and the sort of emotion he wants on his team.

"If you want to play for me moving forward, I don’t care what your resume says, you better have some damn fire and energy in you," Kelly said. "We had one guy in the entire football team that had emotion and fire, and that is Dexter Williams."
