Week 4 Report Card: Cook reminds everyone he's top of the class

Logan Bowles-USA TODAY Sports

Week 4 means the college football season is now a month old, and what a wild run it's been thus far.

Here are the grades for the final week of games in September.

A

Dalvin Cook

If Dalvin Cook played against South Florida every game, he would likely go down as the best player in college football history. The electric Florida State junior torched the Bulls for 266 yards and three touchdowns last year, and somehow surpassed that total in the rematch Saturday. Cook finished with 267 yards and two scores on the ground and added 62 yards receiving as the Seminoles pounded South Florida 55-35.

Justin Fuente's Virginia Tech

It certainly hasn't taken long for Justin Fuente to hit the ground running with Virginia Tech. The former Memphis coach is off to a 3-1 start in his first season with the Hokies, and his offense continued piling up the points versus East Carolina on Saturday, highlighted by quarterback Jerod Evans' insane 55-yard touchdown run. The Hokies have now put up 103 points in wins over Boston College and the Pirates.

B

Devers turns Hill into headless quarterback

Freshman Tai'yon Devers has three tackles in his career for Minnesota, and all three have resulted in a fumble and recovery for the Golden Gophers. His latest tackle was an absolute hammer shot on Colorado State quarterback Collin Hill. Devers hit the Rams pivot so hard Saturday that his helmet went flying at least 5 yards. This isn't the first time Devers has absolutely decleated a quarterback: The first sack of his collegiate career was a monster hit on Oregon State quarterback Darell Garretson. The hit is certainly worthy of an A, but we'd like to see some more production from Devers, so he heads home with a B.

C

Georgia receivers forget how to catch

It's hard enough playing against Ole Miss as a true freshman quarterback. When your receivers decide to stop catching the ball, it's damn near impossible. This was the scenario that prized freshman Jacob Eason faced with Georgia on Saturday as the Rebels absolutely boat-raced the Bulldogs 45-14 in one of the day's more lopsided results, with Georgia dropping four passes in the second quarter alone. The receiving corps certainly wasn't the only thing misfiring for the Bulldogs on Saturday, so they don't get anything worse than a C.

271-pound Penn State kicker lays the wood on Michigan returner

This is not the first time you have seen clips of 271-pound Joey Julius laying out an unsuspecting returner, and it will not be the last. The Penn State kicker who hits like a linebacker was at it again Saturday against Michigan, clotheslining Jourdan Lewis on a fourth-quarter return. The Nittany Lions, as a whole, got hammered by Michigan 49-10, so the best grade we can give Julius is a C.

D

Michigan State's trainwreck

For the first time since 1985, Michigan State failed to score a touchdown in a home game. That's how historically bad the Spartans' performance was against Wisconsin in Saturday's 30-6 loss. The Badgers' highly touted defense shut down a Michigan State attack that looked unstoppable the previous week against Notre Dame. Tyler O'Connor threw three interceptions Saturday, so perhaps Michigan State's performance against Notre Dame tells us more about how bad the Fighting Irish are than how great the Spartans are. In fact ...

Notre Dame's defense

If you are a fan of defensive football, do yourself a favor: Don't watch a Notre Dame game. Entering play Saturday, the Fighting Irish ranked 98th in passing yards allowed, 101st in rushing yards allowed, and 95th in points per game. Embattled coordinator Brian VanGorder certainly didn't do much for his job security against Duke, allowing 498 total yards in a 38-35 home loss. The Fighting Irish have now allowed 35-plus points in three of four games this year, and with Dino Babers' high-powered Syracuse passing attack coming to South Bend next week, don't expect things to improve.

F

Florida's 2nd-half disaster

Florida entered Saturday's game versus Tennessee with 11 straight victories in the series, and looked well on their way to making it 12 with a 21-3 halftime lead. The second half proved to be an utter debacle for the Gators, however, as Tennessee scored 28 unanswered to flip the script in a 38-28 win. Joshua Dobbs roasted the Florida secondary for 319 yards, and Jim McElwain was thoroughly outcoached in the second half by Butch Jones. McElwain may have captured the SEC East crown in his first season with the program, but he's quietly an awful 1-5 against ranked opponents, with a scoreline of 180-118. Losing to Tennessee on its own isn't worthy of an F, but blowing a 21-3 lead by allowing 38 unanswered points should get you expelled from school.
