Notre Dame's Butler formally charged with 2 felonies
Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler was formally charged with two felonies Tuesday, both of which stem from a weekend arrest.
Butler has been charged with resisting law enforcement and battery against a public safety official. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 2 1/2 years in prison.
Notre Dame suspended Butler on an indefinite basis Sunday after news of his arrest got out. Reports emerged Saturday afternoon citing the police department that charges against Butler had already been made official, but that turned out to be false. Instead, officials waited until Tuesday to formally lay the charges.
Butler was arrested outside a bar Saturday morning after he allegedly threw punches at a police officer who'd ordered him to withdraw from an altercation between multiple women. Butler allegedly shoved one of the ladies, but the charges aren't related to that.
The senior defensive back has played in 37 games over three seasons for the Fighting Irish, making three starts.
