Richt: Miami job was only one that interested me

Mark Richt would probably either be sitting on the couch or getting ready for a round of 18 on the links had the Miami coaching job not become available to him at the end of last season.

Richt, who was hired by the Hurricanes in December after his 15-year tenure at Georgia came to an end, told ESPN's Brett McMurphy on Tuesday he was set to take a year off from coaching until Miami contacted him about its coaching vacancy.

As fate would have it, the 56-year-old ex-Miami quarterback is now preparing to enter his 16th straight season as a head coach.

"I'm trying to help a hungry group of people have success," Richt said of Miami's aspirations.

Several other relatively high-profile jobs turned vacant at the end of last season, but Richt - who played quarterback for the Hurricanes from 1979-1982 - always had his sights set on The U.

He'll carry a 145-51 career record into his first campaign with the Hurricanes, who are set to open the season Sept. 3 versus Florida A&M.
