Confusion reigns supreme as Bowlsby offers contradictory media days speech

Bob Bowlsby spent roughly 30 minutes addressing the crowd at Big 12 media days on Monday, and most people are more confused than before he took the stage.

As expected, the session quickly focused on the recent events at Baylor, and Bowlsby offered the following in his opening statement.

"Let it suffice to say as it pertains to all of our institutions, we are very committed as a group of 10 schools to eradicating sexual assault on all of our campuses," the commissioner of the Big 12 said. "It almost goes without saying that when you combine alcohol and drugs and raging hormones and the experiences of 18-22 year old's, it's probably unrealistic to think that these kinds of things are never going to happen."

The second part of that statement comes off as remarkably tone deaf and seems to contradict the first part of his statement.

The commissioner was then pressed during the question period about the Pepper Hamilton report into Baylor's sexual assault issues.

"They have told us that there is not a written report and what's out there, what we have in writing is what you have in writing. That is the finding of facts and the steps behind it," Bowlsby said when asked about information the conference has received before claiming just seconds later that "we will get more than the public ... we already have more than the public on an oral basis."

It's clear the situation at Baylor is weighing on the rest of the conference, with Bowlsby admitting that some schools in the Big 12 feel the entire league has been tarnished.

"I think those are certainly those among our board that have felt that the image of the Big 12 and the other members of the Big 12 have been sullied as a result of this incident," Bowlsby admitted. "It's gotten a lot of publicity, obviously, so that's the reason the Board took the steps they took."

Perhaps Bowlsby's handling of the Baylor situation can best be summed up by his closing remarks on the topic.

"To say that we have a vision for what the end game is would not be accurate."
