Seahawks' Boykin agrees to lesser assault charge, expected at training camp

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Trevone Boykin has agreed to "a lesser charge" following his December arrest for allegedly striking a police officer, according to his agent Drew Pittman.

TMZ reported Tuesday that Boykin was charged with assault and could face up to one year in prison, but the quarterback's agent released a statement to the Seattle Times clarifying the situation.

Some of the facts of today’s TMZ report are incorrect. Trevone has already agreed to terms with the authorities on a lesser charge. He has been accountable and remorseful from the beginning. Trevone is looking forward to training camp starting July 30th and to competing for a roster spot.

Boykin will be arraigned on the charge Aug. 1 in Bexar County Court, Texas, one day after the Seahawks training camp is scheduled to open.

The 22-year-old was reportedly arrested after being thrown out of a San Antonio bar and striking a police officer Dec. 31, 2015. As a result, he was suspended from his final bowl game at TCU.

Boykin was signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent after the arrest caused his draft stock to plummet, but he will still have a shot to win a back-up role as a rookie.

Russell Wilson and former practice squad player Jake Heaps are the only other quarterbacks currently listed on the Seahawks' roster.
