Alabama left tackle Cam Robinson and defensive back Laurence "Hootie" Jones will not be prosecuted on the weapons and drug charges laid against them due to a lack of evidence, the district attorney's office decided Monday.

The charges haven't been dropped completely, but the case won't proceed unless new evidence is presented, the county clerk's office said.

"I want to emphasize once again that the main reason I'm doing this is that I refuse to ruin the lives of two young men who have spent their adolescence and teenage years working and sweating, while we were all in the air conditioning," District Attorney Jerry Jones told KNOE 8 News.

Robinson, a prospective top 10 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and Jones were arrested in mid-May.

Robinson faced a felony weapons charge and a misdemeanor drug charge after police found what they alleged to be a stolen firearm and a bag of marijuana in his car.

Jones, who was with Robinson during the incident, faced misdemeanor charges for possession of a controlled substance and illegally carrying a weapon in the presence of narcotics.

Head coach Nick Saban declined to comment on the situation through a program spokesperson. When the pair were arrested, Saban said the matter would be handled internally, but noted he'd wait for the legal process to play itself out.
