Baker Mayfield disagrees with Denzel Valentine winning Player of The Year

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

In a controversial decision Thursday, Michigan State's Denzel Valentine won the AP Player of the Year over Oklahoma's Buddy Hield, a decision many disagreed with, including Baker Mayfield.

The star quarterback for the Sooners' football program tweeted his displeasure at Hield being overlooked for the award, calling it "ridiculous."

Valentine is certainly a worthy winner, posting gaudy numbers of 19 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game, but Hield's incredible performance in the NCAA tournament has raised his profile.

The Spartans fell victim to a shocking upset in the first round, while Hield has dropped 117 points in four games thus far. The award, however, is voted on prior to the tournament, similar to the Heisman being presented before bowl season.

It doesn't appear that fairly important distinction is doing anything to quell Mayfield's feelings, though.
