Nebraska to decline any postseason tournament invites

Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

Nebraska's already slim chances at an NCAA tournament berth ended Friday with a loss to Maryland, and the school has decided that will be the last action of the 2015-16 campaign.

While the Cornhuskers won't be going to the NCAA tournament, they were likely to receive invitations to lesser events, such as the NIT (National Invitational Tournament) or the CBI (College Basketball Invitational). Coach Tim Miles, along with other key members of the program, felt the season had gone on long enough.

"After talking with the team and our administration, we were all in agreement that the 2016 Nebraska Basketball season should end in Indianapolis," Miles said in a statement. "There were some attractive opportunities, but the season has been long, considering we started practices in late July for our trip to Spain, and missing additional class time isn't in the best interest of our student-athletes."

The Cornhuskers finish the season with a 16-18 record after winning two games in the Big Ten tournament for the first time since 2006. The decision to end the campaign also marks the completion of senior standout Shavon Shields' career.

Shields ranks fifth on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,630 career points.
