Larry Brown not planning to leave SMU

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

Larry Brown isn't going anywhere.

Despite being banned from postseason play this season and serving a nine-game suspension to start the year, the SMU head coach is looking forward to a fresh start next season.

"I love what I do and I love where I’m at and I want to see it continue to get better," Brown told Bill Nichols of the Dallas Morning News. "I didn’t think about any other alternative but to continue to be a part of the program and build on everything that’s been accomplished and try to accomplish more. I think we’re going to get all this stuff behind us and continue to get better, and I want to be a part of that."

The 75-year-old has made many stops in his coaching career, but cited the support he's received with the Mustangs as a reason he plans to stick around.

"I don’t want to see this situation end," he said. "If they want me, I’ll stay as long as they want. We’ve got everything in place with Tim. All I care about is watching SMU grow. It would be nice to be a part of that."

Brown's work with the program certainly hasn't gone unnoticed. After compiling just three seasons with 20 or more wins since 1992-93, the Mustangs have won at least 25 games in each of the past three campaigns.

"When we came, I thought we had unbelievable potential but I didn’t realize we weren’t going in the Big East and I didn’t realize a lot of obstacles we’ve faced," Brown said. "But I think we’re all encouraged by the direction we’re going. I really believe we’re going to be an elite program if we aren’t already."
