Charleston junior point guard Joe Chealey will miss the entire season after suffering a leg injury in practice this week, the school announced Wednesday.

As a sophomore, the Chealey led the team in assists per game (3.3), and free-throw percentage (75.8), while recording 12.4 points, and 3.6 boards.

"We are really disappointed for Joe," head coach Earl Grant said. "He worked extremely hard in the spring and summer improving his skill level, athleticism and strength to get ready for the upcoming season and to lead our team.

"I know he will be in good hands with our medical staff during his surgery and recovery."

Chealey has played 60 career games with the Cougars, starting in 42 of them, and has emerged as a leader on the court. Last season, he notched his first 100-plus assist season.

To end last season, he also had a career-best 12-game double-digit scoring streak, where he averaged 14.3 points per game through the conference tournament quarterfinals.
