NCAA proposes tougher academic-integrity policies

Kirby Lee / US PRESSWIRE

New legislation announced Friday by the NCAA proposes tougher academic-integrity policies and sets expectations for athletic department staff and athletes.

Should the proposal by the Division I Council pass in April 2016, any cases of coaches or staffers being involved in academic misconduct will be considered an NCAA violation.

In the proposal, impermissible academic assistance is defined as "substantial academic assistance" to athletes "not generally available to the school's students" or not authorized by other Division I rules.

The proposal also rules out "creating an academic exception" for an athlete to improve a grade, earn credit, or meet a graduation requirement.
