VIDEO: Michigan State fan celebrations lead to fires, arrests

Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

The book on Michigan State's somewhat unlikely run to the Elite Eight as a 7-seed is that it shouldn't be all that surprising, because Tom Izzo and the Spartans have been here before.

Their fans acted like they decidedly had not been there before on Friday, causing quite the disturbance just off campus in East Lansing after the Spartans topped Oklahoma in the Sweet Sixteen.

An estimated 500 people gathered near an off-campus apartment building following the victory, leading to fires, which then led to police - complete with riot gear - being dispatched. Three arrests were ultimately made, with police releasing the following statement:

Upon making these arrests, the crowd immediately began to disperse. Officers were able to gain control over the situation within 15 minutes of the fire starting, which in turn eliminated any escalation of the disturbance. No chemical crowd management devices were utilized during this incident.

Video of the gathering and subsequent arrival of police has surfaced online.

Not only were fires started and the conduct disorderly, celebrators were also throwing glass bottles into the air, according to State News

The three people arrested were all males, one 20 years old and the other two 19. Their names have not been released, and it's unclear if they're MSU students.

Others in attendance stood by their decision to celebrate the victory, with Kevin, who opted not to give his last name, promising more if the team makes a trip to the Final Four.

"When it comes to student spirit, they shouldn't punish students who are trying to participate," he said. "Sunday, if we win, it's going to be worse."

So be at the ready, East Lansing police: Michigan State has a solid chance at taking down Louisville, even standing as 2.5-point favorites.
