Xavier ends Georgia State's magical run, advances to Sweet Sixteen
The conclusion of Saturday's loss for Georgia State coach Ron Hunter has to be both negative and positive.
The 75-67 loss to Xavier means the Panthers are eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, which hurts, but at least Hunter can take a break from basketball-related slips and falls for a while.
Georgia State was out-muscled by the Musketeers to the tune of a 23-12 rebounding difference and being outshot 67.6 percent to 56.5.
Xavier's bench was on fire, as guard Myles Davis was hot from long range, nailing five 3-pointers, finishing with 17 points and an assist.
Forward Jalen Reynolds set a new career high with 21 points and adding six rebounds.
The Panthers were led by guard R.J. Hunter, son of the coach, who scored 20 points with five assists and four rebounds.
It was an inspired performance, and the father-son dynamic was heartfelt.
"The greatest week of my life," said coach Hunter. "Best time of my life as a father. ... I don't want these kids to be sad."
It remains to be seen what will happen with the Hunters in the future. R.J. may turn pro and Ron may be looking at a new program in the near future.
