Hall of Fame coach Jerry Tarkanian dies at 84

Hall of Fame college basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian passed away at the age of 84, his son announced Wednesday.

A respiratory ailment and infection had him in hospital earlier this week.

Tarkanian spent 31 seasons as a Division I coach, compiling an incredible 729-201 record.

His longest and most successful head-coaching tenure came at UNLV from 1973-92, where he compiled an overall record of 509-105 and led the Runnin' Rebels to a national title in 1990.

Tarkanian also spent time as the head coach at Fresno State and Long Beach State, leading both programs to NCAA tournament appearances.

Tallying 25 seasons with at least 20 wins, Tarkanian put together one of the most consistent coaching careers college basketball has ever seen, and his overall winning percentage of .784 is the seventh-best mark in Division I history.

Tarkanian retired from coaching in 2002 and was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
