Chris Mullin restrained after benches clear in Georgetown-St John's

Georgetown and St John's have played some of the fiercest rivalry games in college basketball history, and despite the fact neither side is going to the NCAA tournament this year, that hasn't lessened the intensity between the teams.

During Wednesday's opening-round contest in the Big East tournament, the benches cleared following a hard foul by Amar Alibegovic on L.J. Peak. Red Storm head coach Chris Mullin and Hoyas bench boss John Thompson III began yelling at one another as Mullin was held back by his assistants.

Mullin and Hoyas assistant Patrick Ewing Jr. were both slapped with technical fouls for the incident.

The NBA legend had a good sense of humor about the incident after the game, telling Jeff Borzello of ESPN he asked Ewing in the handshake line "if he was going to beat me up like his father did." The Hoyas assistant responded, "No, I love you."

Even though it wasn't an in-game highlight, hearing the names Mullin, Thompson, and Ewing in a rivalry game between St John's and Georgetown is a great moment for college hoops historians.
