Despite a dismal campaign that has seen Washington lose 21 games, the program has decided to retain head coach Lorenzo Romar for next season, sources told Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports.

Romar has spent 15 seasons with the Huskies but, barring a shocking run to the Pac-12 tournament championship, he'll miss the NCAA tournament for the sixth straight year.

His saving grace despite poor on-court performance has been his ability to land top recruits. That is set to continue next season - Michael Porter Jr., the top-ranked player in the class of 2017, has committed to Washington.

In the past few seasons, Romar's watched Marquese Chriss, Dejounte Murray, Tony Wroten, and Terrence Ross leave school early for the NBA. That trend appears set to continue with Markelle Fultz, who's the likely No. 1 pick in the 2017 draft.

Romar's career record with Washington is 298-190, but he's failed to win 20 games in each of the past five seasons. The athletic department seems willing to live with his recruiting successes and on-court failures rather than pay his $3.5-million buyout.
