North Texas announced a change in leadership at the head coaching position on Sunday, as Tony Benford has been fired following a dismal 8-22 campaign.

"After spending the season evaluating our men's basketball program, we have determined that a change in leadership is necessary," athletic director Wren Baker said in a statement. "Tony and his staff have worked tirelessly for five seasons to help our student-athletes grow academically, socially and competitively. I am appreciative of those efforts. However, I believe we can compete for championships and, unfortunately, we have fallen short of those expectations."

Benford has been with the Mean Green program for five seasons, posting a 62-95 record in that time.

North Texas finished last in Conference USA this season with a disappointing 2-16 mark in conference play, and did not qualify for the year-end tournament.
