Houston resolves dispute over basketball arena name
The University of Houston has settled a dispute with the Hofheinz family to build a new basketball arena to replace Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Pavilion, named after Judge Roy Hofheinz, will be rebuilt and given a new name but will recognize the former Houston Mayor, naming a street in his honor by the new arena and erecting a bronze statue of him.
"We know our father would want the athletic program at the University of Houston to prosper," Fred Hofheinz told the Houston Chronicle. "So we know he would support this move.
“I’m pleased that we can work together to honor Judge Hofheinz’s spirit of innovation and passion for development, while commemorating his indelible mark on the University.” said Hunter Yurachek in a school press release, vice president for intercollegiate athletics at the University.
The construction of the 7,400-seat, $60 million arena is set to commence after the 2016-17 season.
