NCAA Game Summary - Canisius at Monmouth

West Long Branch, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - A 3-pointer by Andrew Nicholas in the waning moments turned the tide for the Monmouth Hawks as they captured a thrilling 83-82 win over the Canisius Golden Griffins in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the MAC.

Nicholas scored 18 points in just 17 minutes in the second half, finishing with a game-high 28 points for the Hawks (9-10, 3-5 MAAC) as they snapped a two-game slide. Also having a big day for Monmouth was Deon Jones who registered a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, adding five assists, while Max DiLeo pitched in with 15 points off the bench.

The Golden Griffins (12-7, 6-2) were led by Billy Baron with 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals, but he was also charged with eight turnovers as the team saw a four-game win streak come to an end. Chris Perez pitched in with 18 points, Phil Valenti 16, Zach Lewis 13 points and Jordan Heath 10 in the losing cause.

Monmouth shot a solid 47.8 percent from the field in the first half, but the squad connected on only 4-of-11 shots at the free-throw line, compared to 11- of-14 for the visitors, as Canisius claimed a 36-28 advantage at the break.

Both squads shot better than 55 percent from the floor in the second half and while the Griffs were able to hit on 7-of-15 beyond the arc, compared to 6- of-12 for the hosts, Canisius was outscored at the free-throw line, 11-7.

The Hawks managed to overcome 20 turnovers by shooting 52.6 percent from the floor. Canisius also shot the ball well from the field on the day (.510), but it was guilty of a staggering 24 miscues, which the Hawks traded in for 17 points.
