Pelicans' Perkins eyeing Friday return vs. Wizards

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The starting center position has been a major weakness for the New Orleans Pelicans thus far, with Omer Asik and Alexis Ajinca failing to provide a dominant presence inside.

Fortunately, the return of Kendrick Perkins to the team's lineup could impart the spark they need down low.

Perkins is aiming to return Friday night against the Washington Wizards, according to Comcast SportsNet's Kyle Draper. The news is surprising for Pelicans fans, as Perkins was initially expected to miss three months.

The 6-foot-10 big man has participated in just three games this season, averaging 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, and a player efficiency rating of 27.78.

New Orleans got off to a slow start this season after making the playoffs in 2014-15. The team currently sits at 14th in the Western Conference with a dismal 5-15 record.
