Report: Williams to focus on head coaching job despite Raptors' interest as assistant

Monty Williams is likely to focus on another NBA head coaching job despite interest in him as an assistant, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Williams was fired Tuesday after five seasons on the New Orleans Pelicans bench. The Toronto Raptors reportedly may want to bring him aboard as an assistant to head coach Dwane Casey, who was reportedly retained this week amid rumors that some of his assistants may be replaced.

The Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets both have head coaching openings this summer, and it's perhaps notable that Williams played for both teams during his nine-year playing career.

Williams went 173-221 in five seasons in New Orleans, though the bulk of that time came as the franchise rebuilt following the departure of Chris Paul.

Stein also reported Thursday that new Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Billy Donovan will not retain assistant coach Rex Kalaiman, who was the right-hand man to former bench boss Scott Brooks.
