Report: Jazz to sign D-League forward Jack Cooley to 10-day contract

With Enes Kanter finally getting shipped out of town on deadline day after weeks of speculation, the Utah Jazz opened up a spot in their frontcourt.

They'll look to fill it in the short term by signing D-League power forward Jack Cooley to a 10-day contract, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports

Cooley is playing in his first D-League season - with the Idaho Stampede - after a four-year college career at Notre Dame, followed by a season with Trabzonspor of the Turkish Basketball League.

The Jazz gave Cooley a camp deal this past offseason, but opted to cut him just before the start of the regular season. In 16 games with the Stampede, he's averaging 15.5 points and 10.6 boards in 29.1 minutes.

At 6-foot-9, with a 7-foot-1 wingspan, Cooley isn't exactly a giant by NBA standards, especially for a guy expected to play power forward and possibly some center (with the Jazz now lacking a traditional backup behind Rudy Gobert).

But he's consistently proved to be an excellent rebounder, especially on the offensive glass. His offensive rebound rate this season - 5.6 per 36 minutes - would rank second in the NBA to Los Angeles Clippers center/planet-eater DeAndre Jordan.

Even against D-League competition, that's pretty impressive, and should help the Jazz maintain their perch as the league's top offensive rebounding team.
