There was a flurry of activity in the final moments before the NBA's trade deadline Thursday. The Houston Rockets got in on the action late, adding K.J. McDaniels from the Philadelphia 76ers and Pablo Prigioni from the New York Knicks, the Rockets announced.
In what was actually two separate deals, Houston landed McDaniels in exchange for guard Isaiah Canaan and a second-round pick. Then they added Prigioni in exchange for two second-round picks, in 2017 and 2019.
McDaniels is in a unique situation after making a bold decision on his rookie contract. With only a one-year, non-guaranteed tender, the second-round draft pick last year is a restricted free agent this summer. He's averaging 9.2 points and 1.3 blocks per game, but the 76ers have shown no reservations in continuing to keep things torn down, as evidenced by a recent article in ESPN The Magazine.
McDaniels deepens the Rockets on the wing, giving them an albeit young, promising two-way player. They also land the 37-year-old veteran Prigioni, who the Knicks, in any attempt to clear the decks, were happy to move.
Unable to trade away Jose Calderon or even less likely, Andrea Bargnani, the Knicks did manage to get back two second-round picks in 2017 and 2019 from the Rockets, in addition to little-used guard Alexey Shved.
