Report: Clippers 'very confident' they'll land Austin Rivers from Celtics this week

Jerry Lai-US PRESSWIRE

For the second time in two years, the Los Angeles Clippers are set to acquire a member of the Rivers family from the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics acquired point guard Austin Rivers on Monday as part of a three-team trade that sent Jeff Green to the Memphis Grizzlies, and the third-year Duke product isn't long for kelly green.

As was speculated over the weekend, the Celtics have quickly put Rivers on the market, and the Clippers apparently jumped on the chance to land head coach Doc Rivers's son. They are said to be very confident that they'll finalize a deal to acquire Austin by the end of the week, according to a report from Marc Stein of ESPN.

Doc, who was traded from the Celtics to the Clippers in June of 2013, has previously been hesitant to coach his own son, but was singing a different tune Sunday.

"I think a year ago I probably wouldn't," Doc said. "But I think I would for sure. I think this team could handle that. He's a downhill guard, which is something we need, so I certainly would."

Austin, once a bit of a laughing stock after posting one of the worst statistical offensive seasons in recent memory as a rookie, has taken some strides the past two years. He's a more willing defender and uses his size better at that end, but he still struggles to finish at the rim, and his once-promising 3-point shot has regressed some.

In 35 games with the New Orleans Pelicans, Austin was averaging 6.8 points and 2.5 assists in 22.1 minutes, shooting 38.7 percent from the floor and 28 percent from outside. The Clippers need guard depth and have an open roster spot, so even with his flaws he may prove a fit.

Complicating matters slightly is that the Clippers would need to send out $2.04 million in salary to make a deal cap-legal, which may necessitate the involvement of a third team. That's rumored to be what the Celtics and Clippers spent the weekend searching for, though it's unclear what team may be able to help out.
