Hornets' Hairston benched Wednesday due to unexcused absence

P.J. Hairston's rocky rookie season took another turn for the worse.

Hairston was made inactive by Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford during Wednesday's win against the Boston Celtics after the 21-year-old missed practice Tuesday without an excused absence, according to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer

It's unclear why Hairston missed the practice. He sat at the end of the Hornets' bench as they won their second consecutive contest after dropping 10 straight games.

Hairston's gaffe is simply the latest in what has been a challenging year for the Hornets' shooting guard.

The University of North Carolina product was charged with assault in July after getting into an altercation with a high schooler during a pickup basketball game at a YMCA. Charges were dropped in November.

Hairston, who battled numerous off-the-court issues during his time at UNC, too, missed four games earlier in the year with an ankle sprain. He's averaging 5.8 points and shooting 33.3 percent from the field.

The Hornets have a tough back-to-back coming up this weekend, facing the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday before hosting the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday.
