Report: Spurs, Kawhi Leonard end contract extension talks

Kawhi Leonard will have to wait to sign a maximum contract.

Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs have ended extension talks, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

Brian Elfus, Leonard's agent, wasn't happy the two sides could come to an agreement before the Friday at midnight ET deadline for rookie extensions among players from the 2011 draft class.

"We feel Kawhi is deserving of a max contract, and we are disappointed that something couldn't get done," said Leonard's agent Brian Elfus, according to Wojnarowski. "There’s no debating Kawhi’s value. The market has been set. He’s done everything the Spurs have asked of him, exceeded all of their expectations. Coach (Gregg) Popovich has gone out of his way to call Kawhi the future face of the franchise. We have great respect for the Spurs organization, but here, we simply agree to disagree.

"There will be no shortage of teams interested in Kawhi’s services next year. There will be a lot of contract scenarios available to us, and we will explore them all."

Leonard, one of the league's rising stars, is now set to become a restricted free agent after the 2014-15 season, and will surely have plenty of interested suitors.

Although other NBA teams will be able to offer Leonard a contract offer sheet in the offseason, it appears unlikely he'll leave the Spurs. San Antonio can match any offer Leonard receives and, at 23 years old, he figures to be in the Spurs' long-term plans as one of organization's future building blocks.

Leonard, the 2014 NBA Finals MVP, averaged 12.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.7 steals and shot 52.2 percent from the field last season, his third year in the league.

The forward missed the Spurs' season debut with an eye infection but is expected to return to action Friday when San Antonio takes on the Phoenix Suns.
