Cavaliers sign Shawn Marion

The Cleveland Cavaliers officially signed free agent forward Shawn Marion on Tuesday afternoon. Details of the contract were not disclosed, but it was rumored in August (see below) that he would be added for the veteran minimum.

In Marion, the Cavs add a 15-year veteran with more than 1,100 NBA games under his belt. He played and started in 76 games for the Dallas Mavericks last season, averaging 10.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals in over 31 minutes per game.

The 6-foot-7 Marion is a four-time All-Star, and while he may not be the offensive threat he once was, he will provide a capable defensive presence at either forward position and provides some much-needed frontcourt flexibility.

“I’m excited to be a Cavalier,” Marion said in a release on the team's official site. “I can see the hunger and mentality of everyone in the organization and l look forward to being a part of it. The goal is to win a championship and that’s what I want.”
