Deron Williams to undergo MRI on both ankles, surgery a possibility

The never-ending saga of Deron Williams' ankle problems continues.

Fresh off the Brooklyn Nets' second-round elimination against the Miami Heat, Williams provided an update on the state of his ankle injuries, which have plagued him throughout the past two seasons.

"I think so," said Williams when asked about the possibility of undergoing surgery. "I think it is. Just to clean [stuff out], it's nothing major."

Williams will undergo an MRI on both ankles this Friday, and he then plans on meeting with foot-and-ankle surgeon Dr. Martin O'Malley on Monday. At that point, there should be a clearer idea of whether the point guard will opt to go under the knife.

In order to relieve the pain, cortisone shots have become something of a routine for Williams. He received three sets of them during the 2013-14 season, including one prior to Game 7 of the Nets' first-round series against the Toronto Raptors. He also received a platelet-rich plasma injection.

Clearly rattled by his inability to contribute the way he has in past seasons, Williams may opt for surgery in order to return to the player he was in 2010-11.
